World Toilet Day - Function and Aims
World Toilet Day...?
World Toilet Day was first commemorated on 19 November 2001 on the initiative of the 'WTO - World Toilet Organisation'. The background for the initiative was the failing of sufficient hygienic sanitary facilities for around 38 percent of the world population (being 2.5 billion people approx.) with its healthcare- and social economic consequences, in particular as a result of associated disease.
Function and Aims
World Toilet Day is intended to stir up reactions from the leaders in politics and the economy. The commemoration seeks to remove taboos, instead of continuing to repress these, as the toilet problem has yet to be sold for a large proportion of humanity. Demands are being made on national governments to reserve at least three percent of public expenditure on sanitary provision and water supply, but also to combat corruption in the water supply industry. As a result of bribes alone and bribing, an estimated two billion U.S. Dollars disappear annually in dubious funding channels and private pockets, instead of contributing to the addressing of problems, especially by introducing alternative sanitary- and water techniques.
