New Container Terminal at the Mainz Cargo Port: Two track construction assignments for Hering Bau

News published on 16:05:28 01.12.2009

Since the end of October this year, operations have been pretty brisk at the cargo port of Mainz. The entire infrastructure along the Rheinallee is under reconstruction – and Hering is also among the team of construction companies involved in new construction and reconstruction in the Ingelheimer Aue area.

The awarding authorities of the Stadtwerke Mainz AG (SWM – Municipal Utilities) and the Frankenbach Container Terminals GmbH (FCT) have collectively invited tenders and subsequently awarded the contract for Hering Bau to carry out new construction of the track system for a new container terminal at the port of Mainz. The awarding authorities also wanted the old track system, which is over 100 years old, of the current harbour station to be removed in order to make way for a modern new construction. The staff at Hering Bau were jubilant to receive two assignments: The feeder tracks and points leading toward the terminal are under construction for the Stadtwerke Mainz AG, and 5 tracks along with their respctive points are being constructed in the terminal itself on behalf of Frankenbach GmbH. The overall scope of performance incorporates 4.000 m of track (650 m of which is based on concrete sleepers), 12 points, 7 level crossings, 2 km of fencing and cable civil engineering work over a length of 1.5 km. The starter’s gun was fired for the commencement of track construction work at the end of October 2009. Everything should be finished by the 30th of June 2010, so that modern container block trains with lengths of up to 600 m can be processed, and to ensure that an important connection is provided to important, large-scale German and other European sea ports.

The Hering staff presented a piece of track to both awarding authorities on the 9th of November during a press conference. In July 2010, the modern terminal will be opened at the same time as the new freight shipment centre is put into operation.
