The external colouring of the three newly construction building sections of the Alfons-Kern-Schule vocational school in Pforzheim are reminiscent of the colours of the German national flag. The elements of the Hering curtain wall façade, some of which are intricate, were all manufactured with acidified surfaces. The façade for the yet to be completed 2nd stage of construction is planned to be provided with a grey, acidified surface design.

The new construction of the school was made possible by a joint investment of 80 million Euro, which was financed by the city of Pforzheim and the District Office of Enz. Thus, in May 2008, construction work could begin on the plot of the former car park in the Deimling road, and a modern school building could be built to accommodate 1,400 pupils. The agn Niederberghaus & Partner architect’s office was responsible for the design concept.

Named after the Pforzheim architect, Alfons Kern, the Alfons-Kern-Schule recently celebrated its 175 years of existence at the beginning of 2009. At the end of the summer holidays in Baden-Württemberg, the school operation was able to begin punctually within the new buildings. The black building section houses the departments for automotive engineering, metalworking and welding technology, as well as accommodating the heating, ventilation and sanitary technology. The red building section houses the administration offices. The yellow wing accommodates the departments for trainee bakers, butchers and cosmeticians.
