betoShell® as an artistic textile-reinforced concrete facade for a Berlin primary school

Because of the growing population of the Friedrichshain district of Berlin there is not only a housing shortage but also a shortage of school places. The Berlin Senate therefore approved an aid programme with the name “Special Funds for the Infrastructure of the Growing City” aimed principally at renovating the schools.

The Thalia School on the Stralau peninsula was one of the schools to benefit from this programme. The primary school’s two-storey classroom block now has a three-storey extension. The facade envelope consists of grey betoShell® FLEX40 elements with an etched surface which was designed, manufactured, delivered and erected by Hering Architectural Concrete. The south facade is the highlight of the building as matrix formwork technology and fine washing of the area has been used to create the image of a sportsman. This art work was created by Roland Boden as part of the “Art in Construction” competition.
