Concrete meets charcoal look: material mix for Mönchengladbach’s new fire station

The city of Mönchengladbach commissioned Hering Architectural Concrete in January 2023 with the installation of the façade on the new emergency-service and volunteer-fire-department building in Rheydt. Anderhalten Architekten were responsible for planning the project, which constitutes a great example of modern façade design as it uses two different materials for the building envelope’s cladding.

The project covers a total area of 654 square metres with 78 elements. The elements’ acidified finish creates an elegant and timeless look for the façade. The round elements on the west side of the building, which mark the passageway, are particularly worth mentioning.

The project’s highlight: The combination of grey concrete façade and the charcoal-look timber cladding. It produces a striking contrast that creates a modern yet robust and authentic aesthetic for the structure – one that in its subject matter suits the building’s function.
