Installation with Hering rail cranes of torsion beams for noise protection walls on Railway Line 3900, Friedberg-Bad Nauheim

Torsion beams are – as in the Friedberg-Bad Nauheim construction project – steel constructions to bridge obstacles (e.g. railway overpasses, pedestrian underpasses, buildings) that have a distance of more than five meters between two ramming tubes. Torsion beams are also installed in front of railway bridges to prevent load influences from noise barriers from entering existing bridge structures.

With two cranes of the Hering fleet (50 and 125 ton crane) a total of five torsion beams (10 - 26 m length, individual weight 5 - 15 tons) were lifted in and installed in order to mount Hering noise barriers on the beams.

On behalf of DB Netz AG, Major Projects West, Cologne, 3900 noise barriers are being built on the line by Hering. Work began in June 2018 and is scheduled for completion in spring 2019. In the night from 26.01 to 27.01.2019, the noise protection employees of Hering Bau GmbH & Co. KG and the crane team from Hering Bahnbau GmbH arrived to manoeuvre the huge torsion beams into the desired position.

The five torsion beams were delivered in advance to the "Alter Güterbahnhof" storage site in Friedberg/Hesse. From there, the torsion beam EÜ Benekestraße was transported by two track cranes over the tracks to the installation location in wall 1. Here the Bad Nauheim station had to be passed / transited. At the installation site, the two track cranes laid down the beam. A crane then picked it up to lift it into the prepared ramming pipes. The second crane drove back to the storage area at Friedberg freight station. In the meantime, the torsion beams of Noise Barrier 2 were loaded onto wagons using a mobile crane.

The truck-mounted crane transported the torsion beams onto wagons to wall 2. There the beams were lifted into ramming pipes, aligned, wedged and concreted in.

Picking up, moving, loading and lifting the torsion beams during a night shift with the help of the Hering cranes went as planned and once again proved the good cooperation of the Hering Group in complex structures.
