Berlin Promenade, Saarbrücken

Architect: Bierbaum.Aichele | Krüger und Krüger | lukasundlukas architektur | Wandel Hoefer Lorch

The Berliner Promenade is located at the site of the old promenade walk directly along the banks of the Saar River and is now a shopping mile in Saarbrücken. It was built in 1960. It was redeveloped within the scope of the ‘Stadtmitte am Fluss – Umbaumaßnahmen’ project – ‘City Centre on the Banks of the River – Conversion Measures’ – to a design by the Lukas&Lukas firm of architects and is intended to serve as a place of relaxation for the city’s residents*.

HERING was awarded the contract to manufacture, deliver and install 216 high-quality architectural concrete elements. The parts were produced with a finely acidified finish and a sandstone-like feel to match the existing colour scheme.

The integration of the fasteners represented a major challenge during planning and installation because there was only very little space between the prefabricated façade and the cast-in-place concrete wall. Special geometries, such as the front building curved design and the sloping upper edge of the wall, also needed to be taken into account.
The new design has resulted in an attractive and modern promenade – thanks to HERING’s prefabricated elements!
