Energy-efficiency refurbishment, RWTH Aachen University, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Lecture Halls BS I and BS II

HSA Helmer Seiler Architekten

The civil-engineering building dating from the 1960s had already undergone extensive refurbishment over recent years – but the lecture halls hadn’t. Funds from the Economic Stimulus Package II were used to realise a new insulated façade with textile-reinforced concrete for the lecture halls. The use of the thin and extremely lightweight betoShell® elements allowed the façade refurbishment measures that were designed to help improve energy efficiency to be carried out without the need for any interventions into the existing structure. The fact that betoShell® compares favourably with conventional concrete façades where weight is concerned meant that no retrofitting measures needed to be carried out on the building’s existing bearing structure.

The façade area of around 600 square metres was clad with exposed concrete elements in a smooth white finish to create an attractive look for the building.
