The new build for the Otto-Hahn-Oberschule created a new educational facility for around 85 teachers and around 850 students.
The old structure had been demolished in the late 1980s due to the fact that the original building materials had contained asbestos. Classes had been continued in a temporary school building constructed of wood. The design optimisation that used a prefabricated concrete structure meant that it was possible to considerably optimise the original planning costs and complete the new Otto-Hahn-Oberschule in October 2006.
The façade panels were realised with concrete that had been coloured with red pigments. The concrete was later given an acidified finish. The design was based on the use of triple-layered sandwich elements that consisted of a load-bearing, insulating and facing layer. The sandwich elements serve as the load-bearing structure and were connected to the ceiling components using starter bars.
