The extension to the town hall in Hamm is an example of a successful façade refurbishment using prefabricated concrete elements that was carried out for the purposes of reducing energy consumption. The city of Hamm decided to effect an extensive refurbishment because the façade no longer met modern energy and design requirements.
The people responsible for the new outer skin chose a curtain-type mullion-and-transom structure and realise it with red-coloured prefabricated concrete elements that went with the old town hall’s windows, which are framed in red sandstone. The concrete finish was acidified to visually refine the façade and create a particularly high quality impression. HERING was responsible for the entire production and installation of the concrete façade. The 86 elements in total were based on the original façade’s grid and were all manufactured and prefabricated at Hering’s factory.
