What is special about this concrete slab is the very filigree component thickness, which was made possible by substituting the steel reinforcement with carbon. That allowed a slab thickness of only 80 millimetres to be achieved with slab dimensions of around six metres in length and 3.20 metres in width. The concrete used was given an anthracite colour and is very resistant to the effects of freezing and de-icing agents. The slab surface was sandblasted for slip resistance.
This joint development by Hering and Knippers-Helbig was deployed on three bridges in the Rems Valley near Stuttgart in 2019. The background is a very beautiful one as the ‘Urbacher Mitte’, ‘Birkelspitze’ and ‘Häckermühle’ pedestrian and cycle bridges were built in an idyllic landscape, which is criss-crossed by rivers and vineyards, as part of the Federal Horticultural Show 2019.
Hering’s slabs deliver many benefits for future-oriented bridge flooring: thin slabs with huge load-bearing capacities that are lighter and that feature great durability.
