Architectural concrete for the completely renovated WDR mediagroup headquarters in Cologne

The WDR mediagroup headquarters is located in the heart of Cologne, in close proximity to the cathedral. In order to suitably maintain the requirements of this exclusive neighbourhood, this now outdated office building should be completely redeveloped. The feasibility study conducted by SSP SchürmannSpannel AG (Bochum) was convincing, and the architectural firm was commissioned in 2013. The blueprint provides for the functional optimisation of the building, for example with a new floor plan for flexible office organisation.

The outer shell of the building contributes substantially to its modern appearance. In this case, the architects decided to use high-quality architectural concrete from Hering Architectural Concrete. The five-storey building was clad in white prefabricated concrete components, the surface of which was improved through various processing methods such as sand blasting or grinding. The massive prefabricated concrete components were too heavy for the additional attic storey, and so slender elements made of textile-reinforced concrete, which looked very similar, were used instead. In the foyer, however, anthracite-coloured prefabricated elements were installed.

In spring last year, the construction work was delayed due to a fire in the attic storey. But thanks to the competent project team, the schedule was largely met so that WDR mediagroup could soon move back into its headquarters.
