New look for parking-lot WCs

With a length of 1,128 metres and a height of 185 metres, the Kochertalbrücke is Germany’s highest bridge. The ‘Kochertalbrücke Süd’ and ‘Nord’ motorway parking lots are located directly on its eastern side. The federal government’s Autobahn GmbH chose these two parking spaces as part of a pilot project to improve the infrastructure at motorway parking facilities.

In addition to the construction of a new family and children’s zone with appropriate play equipment, a generously designed and fenced area for dogs to run free and a separate fitness area with conventional fitness equipment, Autobahn GmbH's Southwest Branch placed particular emphasis on the renovation of the sanitation facilities. HERING Sanikonzept was awarded the contract to carry out the extensive refurbishment in August 2022.

The two WC buildings were largely gutted and the existing systems removed almost entirely. All the electrical and sanitation systems were renewed, synthetic resin floors installed, the interior walls covered with HPL panels, new doors were fitted and the WC, urinal and hand-washing basins replaced during the renovation. The technical centrepiece was the installation of an innovative control system that records, processes and transmits large amounts of data about consumption and conditions that enable the responsible motorway-maintenance department to optimise operations. Another highlight is the new blue exterior lighting, which is particularly energy-saving and insect-friendly and ensures greater safety at the WC facilities in the dark.
