Everything from a single source: Train station renovation in Hungen/Germany

... with railway construction, civil engineering, train platforms and roofs from Hering – and everything accessible obstacle-free!

In July 2016, Hering Bahnbau tasked itself with the high-quality and modern upgrade of the Hungen train station – situated in the federal state of Hesse, about 20 km south of the city of Gießen.

They worked diligently over the course of an entire year to be able to present an obstacle-free train station with artistic local colour during the official opening ceremonies held on 11 October.

Following extensive demolition work in the area of the old underpass and on the station and centre platforms, the new construction of these track platforms was successively tackled. One particular challenge here was the construction during normal operations, which, however, was mastered with ease.

In addition, during the concrete work the new construction of the pedestrian underpass extension on the centre platform also had to be implemented. The frame of this extension was manufactured externally and brought into its final position with a construction transverse. Furthermore, the lift and stairways to the centre and the station track platforms were renewed and the old platform tunnel was underpinned with the jet grouting process. In total, the track platforms were newly erected across a length of 90 metres.

Hering Systems then wrapped everything up nicely – in this case under two roofs of the "Bodenheim light" type with lengths of 22 metres each. The roofing, which covers the centre platform, was built first; the assembly of the roof over the station track platform followed shortly thereafter.

Official opening of the Hungen train station after the obstacle-free expansion

The final touch was clearly the wall design in the form of high-grade mosaic motifs and a graffiti piece in the area of the underpass which were mounted by artist Andreas Wagner and pupils of the Hungen comprehensive school. Various representatives of politics and Deutsche Bahn AG were able to convince themselves of this modern and inviting design during the opening of the train station on 11 October 2017.

Added value was created, along with the obstacle-free design of the train stain, by the fact that a new entrance to the school was created on the rear of the station. So it’s no wonder that the Mayor of Hungen, Rainer Wengorsch, deemed the project as a “significant beautification” of the city.
